Procedure

Generally you will have to be a United States lawful permanent resident prior to applying for your citizenship. Becoming an American citizen is what many people dream of because it gives them the right to freely live and work in a country where we have a variety of different cultures, ethnicities, and races. The application process will begin with the filing of Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply to become a United States citizen you will need to:

• Be at least 18-years-old (there is an exception for military naturalization);
• Have been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for 5 years, or 3 years if married and living with a United States citizen for the past 3 years, your spouse has been a United States citizen for at least the past 3 years, and within the past 3 years you have not been outside of the United States for 18 months or more;
• Be a person of good moral character;
• Be willing to take an oath of allegiance to the United States;
• Pass an exam that asks questions about American history and government; and
• Be able to speak, read, and write simple words and phrases in English.

If you cannot read, write, or speak English you may be able to qualify for an exception if you fall into one of the following categories:

• If you are over 50-years-old and have lived in the United States for at least 20 years since you became a lawful permanent resident; or
• If you are over 55 years old and have lived in the United States for at least 15 years since becoming a lawful permanent resident; or
• If you are over 65 years old and have lived in the United States for at least 20 years since you became a lawful permanent resident you will qualify to take an easier version of the civics examination; or
• If you have a disability that prevents you from being able to read, write, or speak English.
